A Word on Drugs

The following quote outlines the Fraternity's policy on drug use and esotericism. Although the policy may seem to be making sweeping statements about drug use in general it is understood that, under certain circumstances, some of these drugs may be administered by competent physicians for specific conditions. Although there is always the possibility of damage on the subtle levels, such instances cannot always be avoided and do not constitute violation of our rules.

"Psychism can be like the use of mind-altering drugs, a temporarily pleasant escape from the task of evolutionary growth. A word more about substance abuse: Not only can years be lost in avoiding life, but the inner circuitry which is necessary to channel higher powers is unquestionably damaged by repeated use of mind-altering drugs. The FLO does not seek to govern the personal behaviors of its members, but we have seen verification of the truth of the admonition against former — let alone current — use of illicit drugs by students of the Mysteries. Such substances, including alcohol, scramble the subtle vehicles. Repeated, habitual use causes permanent damage. This statement of fact has nothing to do with moralistic value judgments. We do not refuse to allow past users, now totally free of their old addictions, to pursue the Mysteries so far as they are able. But we know from personal observation of other fine, dedicated Initiates who "did drugs" in their distant youth, that a time will come in their training when they will be incapable of channeling any higher currents. At this point they may choose to serve at the level where they are, or they may take leave of the Path for this life, for they can go no further until reincarnation provides them with a fresh, undamaged vehicle."
